Trimdon Brass

A Brief History...

Trimdon Concert Brass began life as the Thornley Colliery Band in 1870 and under this guise were founder members of the Durham Brass Band League. The band relocated to Trimdon in the early 1990s, a move that brought the band closer to its player base and has resulted in strong links being forged throughout the wider East Durham area.

We have a flexible approach to membership and welcome players of varying abilities. We are also able to loan instruments free of charge if you do not have your own.

Trimdon Brass - Will Harrison

Will first became associated with Trimdon Band in late 2003 when he came to the band for a rehearsal and since then he, in his words, has “never looked back”. Even when he went off to University in 2005 to continue his studies in Music, Will would return to the band on regular occasions over a 4 year period for rehearsals, concerts and contests, playing anything from cornet to horn to percussion. When Will returned to the North East on a permanent basis in late 2009, he re-joined the band taking up a solo cornet seat.

In 2013, Will conducted the band at The Ripon Entertainment contest, with the band coming away with 2 trophies. Will realised that conducting Trimdon Brass was a natural progression for him and over the next few years the band went from strength to strength. Will took a break from conducting for short while and once again filled a vacant Solo Cornet seat before having a short spell on Soprano Cornet and Flugelhorn. In 2018, Will resumed his rightful place stood in front of the band and in March 2019 the band achieved its best result to date, qualifying for the 3rd Section National Brass Band Finals at the first time of asking after gaining promotion following the 2018 contesting season. On qualifying Will said that “to lead the band at the finals will be an honour. Having played in the finals on 2 occasions, it will be a dream come true to lead Trimdon on their first crack at the third section finals”.

As a player, Will began playing trumpet at the age of 8 and this soon became cornet as he found his love for music in a local brass band. Will spent his younger years at what was then, Broughtons Band (now Durham Miners Association Brass Band) before making his way to Trimdon and then off to University. He still enjoys his playing and is currently the Flugelhorn player for The Felling Band.
